MedicAlert Announcement- Act Now!

Published on Wednesday, June 1st, 2011 | Source:

Deaf Community Services of San Diego, Inc., is offering a special giveaway program in partnership with the Change a Life Foundation and the MedicAlert Foundation. The program ends on June 30, 2011, or whenever funding is exhausted before that date.

The program is open to Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, Late-Deafened, DeafBlind people and CI and hearing-aid users. Children, too, are eligible. Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing parents with hearing children may order IDs for their kids. If you are a caretaker of a Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing, or Late-Deafened person, you qualify. Remember, you must be a California resident. Please sign up today for your free one-year membership and ID (worth up to $19.95). If you live in San Diego, get a form from DCS. All other applicants, please go to . www.medicalert.org/deafcommunity. Click on Join Now! on the upper right screen and follow the instructions.

IDs and other information will be shipped directly to your home at no charge. It’s FREE!

DCS worked with MedicAlert officials to add the following words to its list of acceptable terms to be engraved on the ID emblem:

• Deaf
• Uses ASL
• Uses American Sign Language

Hard-of-hearing and late-deafened persons who prefer to use “hearing impaired” may choose that phrase instead.

CI users will be asked which ear is implanted. MedicAlert will also request the name of the CI manufacturer and the serial number of the implant. CI users cannot have MRIs, so the ID must show that the user has a CI.
All medical information in a member’s file is strictly confidential. Your doctor’s name and number and the name and number of a relative or friend to be contacted in an emergency will be kept on file in MedicAlert’s headquarters in Turlock, California.
How Does MedicAlert Save Lives?
1. In an emergency, first responders look for the “MedicAlert” ID and read the engraved information.
2. First responders can call the MedicAlert 24-hour Emergency Response Center for additional critical medical information.
3. The MedicAlert emergency response center calls your designated contact so you or your loved one are not alone in an emergency.
4. The MedicAlert 24-hour emergency response service is always there for you.

If you have any questions, email us at info@dcsofsd.org. We’re here to help you and keep you safe.

Best wishes—
