A look at the past players of GLAD’s Benefit Extravaganza at the House of Blues! (2002-2011)

Recap of GLAD’s 9th Annual GLAD Benefit Extravaganza
June 5, 2011…OH WHAT A NIGHT! The House of Blues, Sunset Strip was ROCKED on Sunday night June 5th by the Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness’ biggest supporters! We thank you for joining us at our exceptional 9th Annual GLAD Benefit Extravaganza at the world-famous House of Blues event hosted by our community friend, Ken Paves.
The event was packed with enthusiasm! Guests enjoyed the red carpet experience and the uplifting GLAD program hosted by Ken Paves with special guests Eva Longoria & Marlee Matlin, featuring Sean Forbes with performances and appearances by the cast of our Title Sponsor ABC Family’s “Switched at Birth” Katie Leclerc, Vanessa Marano, Constance Marie, Lea Thompson, Lucas Grabeel and Sean Berdy, Amber Zion, Anthony Natale, Cheri Oteri, Camryn Manheim, Fabian Sanchez, Felicity Huffman, Jody Stevenson, John Maucere, Kim Kardashian, Lisa Vanderpump, Mark Levin/DJ Digital Aids, Michael Spady, Nyke Prince, Robin Antin, Shoshannah Stern, Tommy Korn, and Tyrone Giordano.
What better way to host a nightclub fabulous event than to have a special performance by one of the most prolific and talented artists in music history…Mr. Stevie Wonder! As a global leader Mr. Stevie Wonder has used his extraordinary talents to be an ambassador for civil rights and social justice along with improving the way disabilities are perceived by society. GLAD shares his passion with worldwide change and considers Stevie an active partner in our commitment to raising awareness and equality. Coming together on a night like this, showing the world exactly what WE CAN DO was so fitting with his role as one of United Nations Messengers of Peace advocating the organization’s work and championing people with disabilities.
Together we pumped up the volume and made it happen! As an agency “of, by, for and with the deaf and hard of hearing community”, our outreach offices, as well as our headquarters, make every effort to provide quality services in the areas of health, human, employment and housing programs for the deaf and hard of hearing community. With your generous support, these programs will continue to flourish. We thank you for supporting the fundraising efforts of GLAD and we look forward to seeing you at our future events.

Special Thanks to Event Host Ken Paves
We extend our deepest gratitude to Ken for hosting an affair to remember! For the past 17 years Ken Paves has remained one of the most sought after and arguably the most recognizable hairstylist in the world. Oprah Winfrey has called him “the big Kahuna of Hollywood hair.” He has been celebrated for his work which has appeared in the pages of Vogue, Marie Claire, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Allure, Glamour, O Magazine, Vanity Fair, Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, GQ, In Style, American Salon, Modern Salon and many other publications internationally. In fashion and entertainment he has created award-winning styles on the tresses of Victoria Beckham, Jessica and Ashlee Simpson, Eva Longoria, Lady Ga Ga, Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion, Fergie, Eve and Megan Fox to name a few.
It’s no secret that Ken loves American Sign Language! At a young age, Ken developed a fascination with ASL and originally planned to work in Deaf Education after studying the ASL at his local community college in Michigan. The untimely death of his 15-month old nephew further inspired his work with children and his love and respect for ASL grew. Although Ken did not pursue a career in Deaf Education, he keeps his passion alive, embraces each day and shares his knowledge of the community and culture with the world. Following the event, take some time to enjoy his signed video posts on Facebook or take the virtual tour of his LA based hair salon, giving you a glimpse of his signed conversations with good friend and personal assistant, Nyke Prince.

Appreciation to our Title Sponsor, ABC Family/”Switched at Birth”
ABC FAMILY’S GROUNDBREAKING NEW ORIGINAL SERIES “SWITCHED AT BIRTH” MONDAYS AT 9:00 ET/PT
ABC Family’s new one-hour scripted drama, “Switched at Birth,” tells the story of two teenage girls who discover they were accidentally switched as newborns in the hospital. Bay Kennish grew up in a wealthy family with two parents and a brother, while Daphne Vasquez, who lost her hearing at an early age due to a case of meningitis, grew up with a single mother in a working class neighborhood. Things come to a dramatic head when both families meet and struggle to learn how to live together for the sake of the girls.
John and Kathryn Kennish have led the “perfect” life – he a retired professional athlete and she a stay-at-home mom, having together raised their two children, Bay and Toby, in an idyllic neighborhood. But their world is turned upside down when they learn there was a mistake at the hospital and Bay is not their birth child. Bay discovers in her high school chemistry class that her blood type does not appear to match either of her parents’, and official tests confirm the life-altering news. The family meets Regina Vasquez and her daughter, Daphne. A single mom, Regina has worked hard to take care of Daphne, a member of her school’s basketball team, and a typical teenager in every way except that she is deaf. Daphne lives with her mother and grandmother, and attends her deaf and hard of hearing school with her best friend, Emmett.
The girls struggle to keep their footing in the world they know and the new one into which they have both been thrown. Both questioning their identities — Bay, a rebellious and talented street artist, is fascinated to learn that her birth mother, Regina, is also an artistic type; Daphne’s love of sports is shared with her birth father, John, once a professional baseball player. When financial difficulties arise for Regina, she accepts the Kennishes’ offer that she, Daphne and Daphne’s grandmother all live in the Kennishes’ guest house, giving everyone a chance to get to know each another.
“Switched at Birth” is executive-produced by Lizzy Weiss (“Blue Crush”), Paul Stupin (“Make It or Break It”) and John Ziffren (“Melissa & Joey,” “Make It or Break It”). The series also stars newcomer Katie Leclerc as Daphne Vasquez; Vanessa Marano (“Gilmore Girls”) as Bay Kennish; Constance Marie (“George Lopez”) as Regina Vasquez; D.W. Moffett (“Friday Night Lights”) as John Kennish; Lea Thompson (“Back to the Future,” “Caroline in the City”) as Kathryn Kennish; Lucas Grabeel (“High School Musical”) as Toby Kennish; and newcomer Sean Berdy as Emmett. Academy Award®-winner Marlee Matlin will guest star in several episodes this season as Melody, a school counselor who is Regina’s best friend and mother to Emmett.
